Learn the Quran: Surah Al Fatiha

The name Surah Al-Fatiha means “Al-Fatiha” because it is the beginning of the Quran and opens the believer’s connection with God. Al-Fatiha, The word Al-Fatiha is derived from the root word Fatah, which means conquest.

Al-Fatiha is usually the first chapter that children and converts learn when they begin studying the Quran. This indicates the importance of a particular Surah or Surah. As a companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Abu Saeed Rafi bin Al Muala reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: “Shall I teach you the greatest Surah in the Qur’an before you leave the mosque?” Then he took my hand and as we were about to leave, I reminded him of his promise to teach me the greatest surah of the Quran.

He (ﷺ) said, “It is ‘Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil ‘Alamin (i.e., Surat Al-Fatiha) which is As-Sab’ Al-Mathani (i.e., the seven oft-repeated Ayat) and the Great Quran which is given to me.”

Every Muslim must begin praying with this Surah for every Rak’a. Because without this Surah, prayer is neither complete nor incomplete. It is recited at least 17 times during the five obligatory prayers.

Verses of Al-Fatiha

Surat Al-Fatiha consists of 7 verses:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَAll praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.(Al ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi al-‘ālamīn)
الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِThe Entirely Merciful and the Especially Merciful(Ar Raḥmāni R-Raḥīm)
مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِSovereign over the Day of Recompense(Māliki Yawmi D-Dīn)
إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُWe worship You, and we seek Your help.(Ayyāka na’budu wa iyyāka nasta’īn)
اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَGuide us to the straight path(Ihdinā-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm)
صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَThe path of those on whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have enraged [You] or who are lost.(sIrāṭ al lazi na an’amta ‘alayhim, ġayril maġḍūbi ‘alayhim walāḍ ḍāllīn).
